Email your MP to protect pregnant women and new mothers from redundancy
Every year there are 500,000 pregnant women in the workplace. Even though it is illegal to select a woman for redundancy because she is pregnant or on maternity leave, this is precisely what happens to many pregnant women and new mums. The current protections from unfair selection for redundancy in pregnancy do not go far enough.
On the 21st May, Maria Miller MP, Chair of the cross-party Women and Equalities Select Committee, will present a bill to Parliament, backed by Maternity Action and the Fawcett Society, to end the scandal of pregnant women and new mothers being forced out of their jobs through unfair redundancy processes.
The proposals set out in the Pregnancy and Maternity (Protection from Redundancy) Bill would improve upon the existing protections and make it harder for employers to discriminate against pregnant women and new mothers.
